It's called Recipes Happen and if you head over there, you'll see that Bonnie is happy to share her cooking successes, while equally willing to share those inevitable kitchen failures we all experience. Check out a mouth-watering recipe for Roasted Chicken and Veggies, and smile along with her over a failed attempt at Peach Pancakes. Bonnie recently shared some ways to save space in a small kitchen, and you won't want to miss Kitchen Tip Tuesdays.

Bonnie recently held her first giveaway, and I won! Coffee--hot or iced--is my beverage of choice, so I'm super excited to brew up a pot of Gevalia Traditional Roast. And no kitchen is complete without a nice, flexible cutting mat or two. Thanks, Bonnie! Best wishes, and keep blogging!
I'm honored. Thank you, Stacey.

9) Favorite day?

Now the rules for the Sunshine Award are:
1) Thank the person who took time out to give you the award - and link back to them.
2) Answer the 10 questions about yourself.
3) Forward this award on to 10 other bloggers - and let them know you have done so! (Sorry, until yesterday my blogging activity was sadly neglected, so I couldn't come up with 10 gals I felt I knew, or would know me, well enough.)
4) Copy and paste the award onto your site.

I am choosing the following gals and their blogs for their inspiring, encouraging posts. Their entries bring sunshine to my day. My nominations for The Sunshine Award are:
It's been almost a year since my last blog post. I can't even come up with a good excuse. I do apologize.

Let's see, where to start? Perhaps by sharing a few summer sewing pics.

In June, our church gave a shower for an 'en route' baby girl. I decided to stitch a few burp cloths as part of our gift to her. Fun!

Here's a little tote bag I made as a 'happy' for a friend.

A few pretty fabric scraps turned into reversible table napkins. We're trying to go greener around here.

New throw pillows to freshen up the great room. Incentive for this project? I invited my Bible study group over for brunch. There's a second floral pillow at the other end of the sofa, and I have yet to make the final tan print pillow.
Master bedroom throw pillows and master bath curtains, completed recently as part of the never-ending bed and bath redo. There are still pillowcases to be made and a small storage chest to paint, and now I think I'd like a deeper hue on the bedroom walls.
Here's a laundry room valance I promised a sweet friend back in twenty eleven. She didn't receive it until July of twenty-twelve. Apparently friends do let friends procrastinate. It's fun to write 'twenty eleven' and 'twenty twelve.'

I like to call this the 'Anybody missing a tablecloth?' skirt. Seriously, I washed the water repellent out of this rummage sale home dec print to add a summer skirt to my wardrobe. You can find the Favorite Things Cute Skirts pattern here. It's easy to sew and offers several variations. I plan to make a few more.

How about this 'Who stole the curtains?' top? I had tucked away a pair of unusable voile curtain panels awhile back and recently pulled them out to sew, a la Scarlett O'Hara, a wearable muslin. Remember when Scarlett made herself a dress out of the drapes? Anyway the popular, free, downloadable Sorbetto pattern from Colette can be found here. Google 'sorbetto' for inspiration; there are some creative sewists out there.

A skilled sewist drafted and generously offered online a sleeve pattern for the Sorbetto, found here, so you know I had to try a second, sleeved version. This was made from a cut of thrifted, vintage-ish cotton.

And what kind of grandma would I be if I didn't add this unrelated but timely gem? Our son-in-law's sister had a beautiful Georgia wedding last month. Grandkiddos Ethan, 6 and Ellie, 3, made a pretty cute ring bearer and flower girl, don't you think? It was a most wonderful celebration!
I'm excited to tell you in my next post about a favorite blogger of mine, Stacey from Embracing Change. What an honor to be nominated by Stacey for a Sunshine Award! And can you believe it? She named one of her darling furniture redos after me! She called the piece Red Hot Rhetta, hee hee. It's just one example of her many amazing furniture redos, detailed on her blog. Check it out!
Since fresh peaches are in (sweet, juicy, drip-down-your-arm) season, it seemed almost heretical to consider using frozen now. Then I remembered a well-loved recipe for Peach Cobbler from Lora Lee Parrott's Sunday Dinner. I only know Him in the embrace of His person when He is allowed to 'do.' I have attempted to do service for Him; I now want Him to serve through me. I have lived my life for Him; He wants to live His life through me. My ministry has not been pleasing to Him; He wants to minister through me. I have struggled, attempted, and tried; I am tired and have accomplished nothing. I will rest in Him who came to source me. I will respond to His doing. That fell through when she met someone, became engaged within two weeks, and set off to marry her prince. I was a young thing in my parents' eyes, and they didn't want me living alone, so that was the end of that. Meanwhile I'd purchased a little bistro patio set at Englander's. But in all of her pale yellow splendor, Miss Bistro ended up in my parents' basement for another few years.

Fast forward to married life, when she came out of hiding and adorned a deck (first home), a paver patio (second home), and another deck (present home). Forgot to take any 'before' shots again; sorry. At least I'm consistent.

This wall hanging was a garage sale frame made of plastic to resemble wood. (I know--classy, eh?) I spray painted the frame with my bf Heirloom White, accidentally broke the glass, got disgusted with myself and made my project-gone-wrong disappear. After the shelf redo, though, I decided to retrieve it and try adhering fabric to the frame's backing using spray adhesive, centering our last initial on the fabric, and adding a hanger. (The letter 'S' was a self-adhering mirror for which I paid $1.49 and then spray painted HW.)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgnhKNWprEmgQRAnpF6xgh2en5B1IaNsF2w-7p72G04wA_EjFl4WeBveVt2VTc7a-MeVuxYe43uJeMMnQIAh9IKfTi2nLtDPRUMYssygiWLI4Ng8AVa7mmj2RD6r3WdGyQUIMaXEmuO6Bc/s400/Summer+Projects+2011+007.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5627363301547324978" />
It's presently hanging over the towel rack. (I was country when country was cool.) After carefully removing the tin to spray paint for another project, the sweet hubs cut me a piece of plywood to cover the entire back.

I used spray adhesive to cover the plywood with one of the prints I'm working with to redecorate our bedroom. Meanwhile, after a good cleaning, I spray painted the shelf with my old friend, Heirloom White.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiHvOjx6wSUFeXwbYnRAxKHoz-RYYIm37_SDwKfHSYE6c7BVOCKSNvjF2cIywupoNen8u8XqW8lExVjIMdClKcWCFTrHcKnFV5DmY8CwO_3IJaoedqjJiciS-xGTmYMH08VDEnlH0tLEd0/s400/2011-06-21+Shelf+Redo+001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5621022149748314050" />
After stapling the plywood to the back of the shelf and adding a new hanger, it was ready to put up above the night table. Late! Late posting to this blog, and late to the trash-to-treasure scene. However, I'm excited to share my first chair makeover, inspired by the creativity of so many fellow bloggers. I accidentally deleted the 'before' shot from the camera; sorry. So...please imagine a medium-stained, scratched chair with a faded, country blue, small print, polyester cushion--something that would go for, say, $5 at a rummage sale.

Now--with a little cleaning/sanding, a can of black semi-gloss spray paint, and a yard of fresh home dec fabric--ta-da!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgN8nGz38ug-0uTL0Vs9UVoioVvGlNjHTu11t4lx4JWNhzV-2B3TXzzm5YkWak_UbsNtkqbX7-GvBdUvb1ybLR2IAVtjyTWqOzkJUjGi91x1GSQD8o07eLp2SWjcFodFbmWDoYObd7SfCE/s400/2011-06-20+Rummage+Sale+Makeover+001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5620345041275878978" />
I think she's cute, comfortable, and functional--providing extra seating when needed. I missed you!

Please forgive my prolonged absence. Last spring, the Lord called me to a step of faith--to commit a considerable amount of time and energy to in-depth study of God's Word and facilitation of weekly core group discussions for our local Community Bible Study. Following some intense training, I began serving last month. This is a humbling experience, bringing a degree of painful growth as it lies quite a distance from my comfort zone. I'm thankful for God's mercy, love, and patience as I inch uphill toward, I pray, maturity in Him.

Mums Revisited
My experimentation with mums was a success. Here's a photo of the sweet yellow blooms that brightened our deck with the approach of autumn weather.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEix16VV8eAvjHRtt1buVvrY3g4glMmfS-Iwqlvk9PZBn8TbSmO3Epnmv-EZe20JzjHE2e_b_qY3lRSDRf7tpxqSqKBG4qa3hx_3gXTd6hGWnMVqBqw5P82adF0B13uK_8GrYjYMBh-VowM/s400/2010-09-24+Recent+projects+002.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5532120158830074258" />
Cute Cupcake Wrappers
To dress up some carrot cupcakes for a clergy appreciation dinner, I found some darling brown tulip baking cups here. Just place the wrappers in your muffin tin, turn batter into the wrappers, and bake! I used a simple piping tool to add the cream cheese frosting without getting it on the wrappers. If interested, you might want to shop around; after ordering these, I found them at better prices elsewhere online.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgoec0REr74G9YT36hP8ZkeREbTuvM-jDDQNWQgUAGnPY4MaJyx11itMD5VPxRD1M8nI3mnQrL0SlaeHQIu5BLM5tO6c3cRNwFDMvO2EiVzA-GMxe7YDH3fFV9NrCW6S1TgF-uz3lSXYrc/s400/2010-10-22+Recent+projects+007.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5532127034797572946" />
A couple of other projects--a small, painted chest and a writing desk with an antique sewing machine base, both for our bedroom--were completed during my time away from blogging. I hope to share them with you here, very soon.

Blessings!Rhettahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15503228776390104481noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7106475763165791010.post-1536679604919060662010-09-01T19:20:00.009-04:002010-09-01T20:04:34.862-04:00Fearfully and Wonderfully MadeIsn't a baby one of God's most amazing miracles? Near the end of camp grandma, a talented friend met us at the park for a photo shoot of our grandbabies. She happens to love the swirly pattern of hair on a baby's crown, so she captured the top of Elliana's head.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhpxB9xcx2ecQbYUfj_F4pbF2dNCKxn-ZcCAv3T0KEuWYdVzrmyhLPQz5QH-MnUdMUg_GJ2cvJBGaAz1VXFNpkGrVqv5P_YNpMLIU0NPbptimI_KBY8OuUjKkvcoFcYFR4PwBTrvGW9APM/s400/2010-09-01+Fearfully+and+wonderfully+003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512095859429723138" />
A few years ago, Ethan's daddy photographed his chubby little feet.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiVO-ZmZXXzBgvuDVUMmahlYapov88Cv8AodTJmhOOoANr7cPayUzsipugKCQr5kVaA2STmYtshEEqIFtvzfweMy1QHt28Dd9K_jp5RDHEuDmc4cM3zSgjYACI5DiuhPc982xYKzuTRkIM/s400/2010-09-01+Fearfully+and+wonderfully+004.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512096214124776706" />
Since I happen to think baby parts are just about the sweetest things around, I decided to display the photos of Ellie's crown and Ethan's feet with Psalm 139:14 for a meaningful (to me) collage.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_IE_MZnHF6sEKZVz4doWpiKGRQiWBrdAdVPBD5A1b0KIVp1-Nd7t0CJdjilSoUMuin9xHjZ8-aqg-UsuFIrFRVWYMfE5ogpabkYsMjH6xNBiLvp2S-Ud7UEw4-hHlbRX6JO3f3LbxdGM/s400/2010-09-01+Fearfully+and+wonderfully+002.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512096712891114578" />
Perhaps you would like to join me in praise to our heavenly Father for the miraculous, most precious gift of life.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfITjEXk61822naj1nmkvtYv_GBc2Iof2sHkET0MgKLhX0LnLnhpn4XD1EJdBIDxWT7vRZIlavJSwJo6_pYm-JiSe6pbcjocPMbfV5Pe44rK6GlKGkl-ax5rN6B36mArc5ZNlvWq3A06Y/s400/2010-09-01+Fearfully+and+wonderfully+001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5512098324013445858" />Rhettahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15503228776390104481noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7106475763165791010.post-81934390121314403492010-08-23T09:51:00.011-04:002010-08-23T10:17:54.840-04:00A Most Wonderful Day!Mackenzie Layne, our beloved first granddaughter, is heading off to college this week. I'd hoped for a number of photos to share here, but let me tell you, it took everything we had just to keep up with our two adorable blurs of activity. Call me old fashioned, but I like to make a list with a real pen on real paper, preferably encased in a pretty little zipper binder.

I'm of two minds about smartphones. Mine is highly valued for its ability to connect with a friend or search the internet. On the other hand, where list making or calendar filling is concerned, I wonder whether a blackberry is best showcased in a cobbler or preserves.

A few of my goals as summer gives way to fall:

- Write a coherent post to summarize our camp experience.
- Regain consistency in studying the Word.
- Plan an autumn getaway with the hubs.
- Finish decorating our bedroom and bath. This has dragged on way too long!
- Design a square foot garden for 2011.

I might not accomplish everything on the list, but having written goals is a great help to this dinosaur.Rhettahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15503228776390104481noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7106475763165791010.post-43540798769456154702010-07-31T11:13:00.005-04:002010-07-31T11:23:21.041-04:00Our Two Campers<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 266px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhzpqfv48QsncDNgKtAkyyiqATGeyDpNcosFin3sSpnPaBimTKTMjOUYDNNvXVFWhTTeMpO7qi_jdtrjzuunZOulmXARvAmlhJB5q7vsYkzj5c3jLyFrFagt6EWiTRkpXRowIAihZIvozk/s400/Ethan+Ellie+Camp.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5500090621497406802" /> Sorry I haven't posted lately--been very busy. We returned Saturday night from a whirlwind 20-hour trip--ten each way--to pick up our precious grandbabies for a week's stay with us. We all managed to make it to church yesterday morning, then we spent the rest of the day adjusting to our new routine. Today's going more smoothly, and soon I hope to report that we've hit our stride. Photos coming soon.Rhettahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15503228776390104481noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7106475763165791010.post-59753660783438068112010-07-20T15:46:00.009-04:002010-07-21T12:58:56.283-04:00Getting CloserIn less than a week, we'll be sharing our space with two little campers. Although Ethan, four, is a veteran, this will be 16-month-old Ellie's first time to attend Camp Grandma. We're setting up toys and play tents at home, cleaning the camper--with tentative plans for an overnighter at a local State park--firming up an outdoor photo shoot, and gathering vital provisions--whole milk, healthy snacks, diapers, and camp pj's, to name a few.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 383px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiNa_esXsKwCHyeBSIPjjw-sj31tz-bJeqO8FCbMO2aVuwHp1ykc2F7wHZhaNqLfcNktnavhShUYje5vYEYnWpqyIx5izc103ONrjwZd39slf9303_jTOXLXWaA-N8v6goHRF-skhcd5ng/s400/2010-07-21+Trailer+003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5496404377841521986" />
We'll see how it goes.Rhettahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15503228776390104481noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7106475763165791010.post-56525584471457023972010-07-18T09:16:00.009-04:002010-08-09T22:17:24.049-04:00Sunday Serenity<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirYG61cmhUBlML3xJjxllIC19G3Hp3nl1yXsVno_6dZBUYf6FPMUciwLe7-JRHeGMh4RSE-dbeUpL1RNnCWg3fNjX3_pIrSGxt4JDXtFsg36qxiSDMQ5ugApdZRiMhh1dEgAuL9eIRyYs/s400/Sky.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503599502712977922" />
He who forms the mountains, creates the wind, and reveals his thoughts to man, he who turns dawn into darkness, and treads the high places of the earth--the Lord God Almighty is his name.

~ Amos 4:13Rhettahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15503228776390104481noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7106475763165791010.post-66696119760456605942010-07-17T10:58:00.021-04:002010-07-17T11:58:05.163-04:00A Love Affair with Heirloom WhiteBuying new accessories for our home does not appeal to me as much as restoring the old. Maybe my attitude is fueled by the green movement, by empathy--after all, I don't want to be tossed out because of my ever-increasing imperfections--or by frugality. Most likely it's all of the above.

Enter Heirloom White, my new best friend. Back in the 80's the hubs gave me a cute country pine clock. A few coats of rich, creamy white extended its life and gave our wannabe cottage-style bedroom a touch of charm.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjhA_dBlPSFn9q5IadcLHuB1jqjRAcXd31cEj79bO1GrwG3_jMGBX98JRUnqqSn5Uf0ceFJZRxk-Mwhc9o4sQRPe3N9lqfiBgjv4CwHeCwbRUxmBe3byuBVMlyvSVA808bgj1SjFFuOPxc/s400/2010-07-17+Heirloom+White+002.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494894949284273410" />
Next up, a couple of old mixed metal-blotched frames, now Heirloom White, display two IKEA note cards I've had for a few years, creating another bedroom wall brightener.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjljfr6DW4SWVPIodAKujNbnA2f7ibU4RZ_zxT2w5Vx8OYari34nbouLatQJDBDo3pLMOiYw_bzRTCD_eboOcvHRva0kyB0Kb7H8c39WspHWY5aG-yQRw2HZduDNACATiJ4ywef7HcHJgM/s400/2010-07-17+Heirloom+White+001.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494896631343546898" />
A dated oval print framed in dark pine became a chalkboard adorning the small space just off the kitchen. (I had my doubts, but a few coats of chalkboard spray paint did indeed transform the print into a message board!)

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhCLobLP0kRkewvVNUjUygDo9T5kRPzT64Sofren7MIKEedrrJwcwFJGHTo6UHxJV8ev7swaNArh4KeA9U_C5sGmIlNjXLp0gJ84y0AZXA7jg05N5Tt8Tlz6J4_eM8kIUmesrXNNRHicGU/s400/2010-07-17+Heirloom+White+003.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494897810239220002" />

<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjA4IFix1mZplOHUVIto9LEm3MR6vgajE4gnaaLJcZt0WbqIfoypUxQ-viMLg_8BLfvf6SltA8grFgj09ODmULQwigM3yQ-RbQzj5VOp6ByS7WbnTOqx_15SwH9xoyV7qw_6q7B6Fq0KPk/s400/2010-07-17+Heirloom+White+004.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494899483444430610" /> And now for a work in progress--an old pine chest to paint and place under the bedroom clock, next to a comfy chair and basket of books. I'm mulling over the idea of stenciling a monogram onto the front panel. By the way, I'm not a great painter. Thank goodness my HW spray paint is so forgiving.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5-xE0OEEwNrw93j7caGb47B6wJPvKHBVGMXnT-pu_UN7tR20mJenFFnv-PWZyel-sG1LRZa12y9SFzASmf_IAmgA5AzLhIbAtozPBg64Zpi99y7TJKXrc__1ZfIRKmVWJ4IpB6z-M5zc/s400/2010-07-17+Heirloom+White+005.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5494900328923681522" />
Ain't love grand!Rhettahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15503228776390104481noreply@blogger.com1
